Welcome back to Live Your Peak, where we share quick and practical tips to boost your health and well-being. I’m Dr. Jack McGrew, and today, we’re focusing on a common issue—breaking sedentary habits.

In our modern world, many of us spend a lot of time sitting, whether it’s at a desk, in a car, or on the couch. Prolonged periods of sitting can lead to a range of health problems, including back pain, poor posture, and reduced circulation. But don’t worry—there are simple strategies you can use to move more and break those sedentary habits.

First, try incorporating movement breaks into your daily routine. Set a timer to remind yourself to stand up and stretch or walk around every 30 minutes. Even just a few minutes of movement can help counteract the negative effects of sitting and keep your body feeling better throughout the day.

Next, consider adding more physical activity to your day. This doesn’t have to be intense exercise—simple activities like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking or biking to work, or doing a quick workout at home can make a big difference. Find activities you enjoy and make them a regular part of your routine.

Another helpful tip is to create a standing workstation if possible. Using a standing desk or an adjustable desk that allows you to switch between sitting and standing can help reduce the amount of time you spend sitting. Even if you can’t use a standing desk, try to find opportunities to stand while working, such as during phone calls or meetings.

Incorporate movement into your social activities. Instead of meeting friends for coffee or a meal, suggest a walk or a fun physical activity. This way, you can catch up with loved ones while staying active and breaking up sedentary time.

Lastly, don’t forget the power of simple exercises. Incorporate quick stretches or strength-building exercises into your day, such as desk stretches, chair squats, or seated leg lifts. These exercises can be done without leaving your workspace and help keep your body engaged.

Breaking sedentary habits is about making small, consistent changes that add up over time.
